FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT ON MY FIRST VISIT
Before your assessment or treatment, we will review all areas of past and current health issues, conditions, symptoms, and all of the questions have been answered. I will then go through structural assessment and administer treatment based on my findings. A few tidbits: - This is not a massage, chiropractic adjustment, or physiotherapy. I have been trained in structural biomechanics of the WHOLE BODY. This means I am looking at the relationship between all of your tissues (fascia, muscles, ligaments, bones, nerves, veins, arteries, lymphatic vessels. - Our treatments are performed FULLY clothed. - It is customized to YOU! You and your friend may come in with similar complaints but your treatments are entirely different because your bodies are different! - It is a gentle form of treatment and depending on the day and your body at the time of treatment you may feel like I have done very little, but in 4 to 5 days after treatment, you will start to notice differences. During ongoing treatment, it is important that you keep your practitioner informed of any developments concerning your health, medication or diagnostic information.
  • WHAT SHOULD I WEAR TO MY APPOINTMENT
Since we are focused on motion, I ask that you please wear clothing that allows for motion! Gym clothes, sweats, shorts, t-shirts etc: PLEASE DO NOT WEAR - Dresses - Skirts - Jeans - Short shorts - Spaghetti Straps - Low cut shirts
  • WHAT CAN CLASSICAL OSTEOPATHIC TREATMENT HELP WITH
Although I do not treat or diagnose conditions (I have never seen a migraine come into a clinic, but I have seen a person with a migraine! 🤣) Please make sure you consult with your doctor or your nurse practitioner to discuss if your condition or symptoms are cleared to be seen by an osteopath first. Classical Osteopathy can help with: Back, neck and joint pain Muscle tension and strain Prevention of injury Overall health Headaches and migraines Concussions Nerve pain Pregnancy-related pain TMJ disorders Sinus problems and congestion Vertigo Work and sports-related injuries Edema, swelling and inflammation IBS symptoms, constipation and diarrhea Menstrual pain The list really never ends, because I treat YOU not your condition!
  • HOW LONG IS MY APPOINTMENT
Manual osteopathic treatment is not a time-based therapy. We book our day in time blocks because there is a typical amount of time we usually spend with a patient. However, we only treat what we find that day, and every time you come in we need to see what has changed and adjust our thought process as you progress through treatment and the increase in ease of motion and decrease in symptoms. The first few treatments may be longer as we get to know you and do a more generalized-customized treatment. As you progress and improve, we start to make smaller more impactful changes and your body can only handle a certain amount of treatment each time. We are highly trained in how to recognize when we are finished for that session.
  • WHAT SHOULD I DO POST TREATMENT
NOTHING! Well, almost nothing. We do not prescribe exercises or stretches. Since your treatment is moving your anatomy in a way that YOU CAN NOT DO FOR YOURSELF. Please avoid heavy weight lifting and extensive workout sessions right after treatment up to 48 hours after. Your body is trying to figure out what the heck just changed in terms of neurological feedback and if put under load (weight) or quick motions can cause your reaction time to change and injury may occur. Please drink a lot of water including lemon water for electrolytes and if you are sleepy, take a nap! Sleep is when we heal the most - SO if you are sleepy, listen to your body and allow it the opportunity to heal - this is why you have come to see me in the first place because you wanted to feel better!
  • HOW LONG TILL I AM BETTER
Well, this is a very complex question! IT DEPENDS How you progress through treatment is really up to you. What is your current state of health? How long have you been experiencing the issue? What do you do for work and outside of work? Are you open to making changes to your lifestyle? This all is taken into consideration among many other things, but something acute like a sprain or strain can be helped in 2-3 visits on the flip side if you have been dealing with the complaint for 10 years it might take 10+ visits. Based on your health intake and assessment we can make a better decision on how long it may take but let's be real I am no fortune teller and it depends on how your body reacts to treatment - so it could be longer, it could be shorter!
  • CAN I SEE OTHER PRACTIONERS (RMT, CHIRO, PHYSIO, ACCUPUNCTURE, ECT)
IMPORTANT... PLEASE INFORM ME OF ANY OTHER THERAPY APPOINTMENTS AT YOUR SESSION! Generally, you do not want to see a massage, chiropractic, acupuncture, physiotherapy etc. immediately before or within 7 days of seeing an osteopathic manual practitioner. The reason is you will become over-treated and your body has not healed from our treatment or theirs. So, if you get more treatment we cannot know how you are progressing next time we see you. Or you may cause an increase in symptoms because your body is overwhelmed. This is not to say you cannot ever see another modality, most patients do! However, out of respect for your body and for our efforts, please consult with us as to when and how much of another modality you can do. For example, many patients will have osteopathic treatment in conjunction with relaxation massage but do the massage on off weeks to the Osteopathic treatment so they are not being over-treated. For more information about what you specifically should do, please ask at your first appointment. Full disclosure of your health history is VERY important.
  • HOW ARE YOU DIFFERENT THAN A CHIRO/RMT/PHYSIO
As an Osteopathic manual practitioner, I work with your whole body; not JUST the spinal system and joints, not JUST the muscles and fascia, not JUST strengthening tissues. As an osteopathic manual practitioner, I will conduct a thorough exam of your ENTIRE body and the RELATIONSHIP between the spinal system (bones and nerves) AND the joints AND the fascia and muscles AND your organs AND the veins, arteries and lymphatics to diagnose the problem.
  • ARE YOU COVERED BY INSURANCE?
The short answer is YES! Most major insurance companies within Canada cover osteopathic manual therapy as a form of para health! However, only ONE allows us to direct bills. We have no idea why this is but across Canada Blue Cross is the only insurance company that does direct billing. So, I will provide you with either a printed or emailed copy of the invoice with my billing number to submit to your insurance company. Most insurance companies have online or mobile submissions and payout within 24 hours! If cost is something you are concerned about, or financially you are unable to seek treatment. Please email me or book a discovery visit to discuss other options. I got into this career to help people and that is exactly what I want to do, I do not want someone to be stuck in pain without anywhere to turn!
